Hisense HLTE300T hands-on review

Hisense HLTE300T hands-on review

Hisense is not exactly a household name, by any stretch of the imagination. To be fair, in certain markets and in specially in the TV realm, the Chinese government-owned brand is a rather formidable force. That being the case, we can't and really won't try to recommend the HLTE300T. However, it is still quite the attention-grabber. Passing by it at the IFA venue, we just couldn't resist snapping a few shots and getting some impressions. The Hisense HLTE300T, which we really hope is not its end-market title, definitely has one distinctive feature going for it the 5.99 inch, 18:9 IPS, LCD display. With its rounded edges, the LG inspiration is rather obvious. That, however, shouldn't be misconstrued as criticism in itself. Quite the opposite, the industry has already made it clear the ultra-wide aspect rations ate going to be a thing in the foreseeable future. And devices like the LG Q6, offer hints that there is space for such experiments outside the flagship realm as well. By all accounts, that is precisely where the HLTE300T resides. Although, Hisense didn't offer any information of pricing or availability, the Snapdragon 430 chipset, HD resolution and rather thick black bezels around the display spell that out loud and clear. To be perfectly honest, that really doesn't sound like a lot of compute power. Still, it is not that far off from what the LG Q6 has to work with. Also, while not blurry or pixelated at first glance, the 5.99 inch panel is definitely big enough to fall a bit short in a pixel-peeping investigation. On a more positive note, 4GB of RAM, with 32GB of expandable storage and a 3,530 mAh battery do sound pretty serviceable. The HLTE300T also has LTE support, a fairly snappy fingerprint reader on the back and a 12MP, PDAF snapper on the back, accompanied by a 16MP selfie one, both with LED flashes. Overall impressions start to pick up even more when examining and evaluating the phone's construction. Its back side is covered with glass, hopefully a scratch-resistant one, which feels really nice to the touch. Plus, the blue color has a certain pop. To be frank, potential performance hurdles might be the only obvious drawback here. During our limited time with the unit, the UI seemed to work smoothly. Reasonably snappy app launches and behavior as well. Still, the heavy skin, which Hisense has dunned VISION, running on top of Android Nougat 7.1.2 can't be doing performance many favors. Still, we were happy to find Google Play services and a full accompanying app package pre-loaded on the HLTE300T.

Apple has sent out the invites to its iPhone 8 event with the simple Let's meet at our place. That place is likely the Steve Jobs theater and . LG V30 supports Daydream VR, is the first phone to use T-Mobile's 600MHz network

LG V30 supports Daydream VR, is the first phone to use T-Mobile's 600MHz network

The marks two important firsts for fun and usability its the companys first Daydream-compatible phone and its the first device to support T-Mobiles new 600MHz band. (Note: the Galaxy Note8 was to also support 600MHz, but it lacks the crucial Band 71). The V30 is LGs first OLED-packing phone in a while P-OLED specifically, which LG tells us is a kind of AMOLED. And its HDR-enabled meaning it can better handle the advanced lighting of modern games. Anyway, its large, high-resolution display in a fairly compact body. And theres Snapdragon 835s Adreno 540 GPU to push VR graphics. By the way, the Google Daydream View headset is $75 on Amazon. As for the new LTE band, T-Mobile got the drop on its US competition and the new 600MHz network is already in one location Cheyenne, Wyoming launched a week ago. The lower frequency will allow cell towers to cover more territory and reception in-doors is much better. For more on the LG V30, check out .

WD introduces SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card with 400 GB capacity

WD introduces SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card with 400 GB capacity

IFA 2017 presenters keep inspiring with breakthrough technology. Today Western Digital introduced its first SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card with 400 GB capacity. The company also introduced the SanDisk iXpand Base for iPhones that enables Apple users to automatically back up files and photos on the charger/portable hard drive. The new SanDisk microSD card allows double the storage since the manufacturer managed to leverage its proprietary memory technology and design and production processes. Now the die can store even more data without changing the size of the card itself. According to WD, over 150 billion apps are expected to be installed in 2017, which many users would store on the expandable memory of their devices. With the new microSD, users will be able to transfer files with 100 MB/s speed which WD calculates as 1,200 photos per minute or topping up the whole microSD with 40 hours of Full HD movies. The microSD card includes 10-year warranty and is available at SanDisks website and UK major retailers at the tempting price of 224.99. Since iPhones do not have microSD slot, SanDisk has a solution named iXpand Base that is a portable hard drive that acts as a charging pad. It has a rubberized surface and a Lighting cable to put the phone down while the battery fills up with up to 15W charging. Meanwhile, all the files are automatically backed up in the device. The iXpand base can store up to 256 GB and the prices start from $49.99 and go as high as $199.99 on SanDisks online store.

Deal: Get a Galaxy Note8 for just $20 per month at Sprint, or wait for T-Mobile's BOGO offer

Deal: Get a Galaxy Note8 for just $20 per month at Sprint, or wait for T-Mobile's BOGO offer

If you want to pre-order a in the US, but want to pay as little as possible for it (and you haven't last year), then Sprint has a very good deal for you. If you use the carrier's Flex Lease scheme and switch to Sprint or add a line you will only pay $20 per month for the phone (after $20 bill credits that start within two invoices). This isn't an installment plan, keep in mind, it's a lease. You can keep paying $20 per month for 18 months, but after that you need to decide what to do: make the device yours which requires paying off the remaining balance, or switch to leasing another model in which case you need to turn the Note8 in. Because this is a Samsung, there's a third option too. With Sprint's Galaxy Forever program, you can switch to a Galaxy S9 or Note9 after 12 months of having the Note8 on that lease. You'll be required to turn in the phablet in good working order, but you won't pay anything else you just start leasing the next-gen device of your choice. If none of that entices you, then perhaps it's best to wait until September 1, since that's when T-Mobile will apparently launch a Buy One, Get One free deal for the Galaxy Note8. This hasn't been officially announced yet, but it's been revealed through a leak. Here's how it will allegedly work. You buy a Note8 on the carrier's equipment installment plan (EIP) and then add a line with a second Note8 (or an or an ) also on EIP. Then you go to and enter the special code 17SAMN8BOGO. After this, within a few weeks you will receive a prepaid MasterCard that will cover the cost of your second handset. Interestingly, it's said that you will be able to take advantage of this deal even if you've already pre-ordered a Note8 from the magenta carrier, as long as you've used EIP for that.

Snapdragon 670 rumored to be a 10nm chip with next-gen Kryo cores

Snapdragon 670 rumored to be a 10nm chip with next-gen Kryo cores

The is just barely getting a foothold on the mobile scene but rumors of its successor have started surfacing. Dubbed Snapdragon 670, this chip will allegedly come in early 2018 and be the first of the series to hit 10nm. Even more interesting, the chip will allegedly have an octa-core Kryo CPU 2 high power cores (Kryo 360) and 6 low-power ones. Note that Kryo 360 would be a third-generation core, while the Snapdragon 835 and 660 use second gen cores (but they are split 4+4 in terms of high and low power). This new processor will use , which features on the Cortex-A75 and A55. This is the successor to big.LITTLE and is much more flexible. Likewise, the GPU moves on to the next generation of Adreno the 6-series while the current Snapdragons use Adreno 5-series. It seems that the Snapdragon 670 will be build by Samsung on its 10nm LPP tech a refinement of the 10nm LPE used in the current Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 chips. Note: LPE and LPP refers to Low Power Early and Plus respectively. (in Chinese)

ZTE announces the Nubia Z17 Lite with a Snapdragon 653 chipset

ZTE announces the Nubia Z17 Lite with a Snapdragon 653 chipset

It wasn't long ago that ZTE launched the with impressive features like QuickCharge 4.0, 8 GB RAM and top-notch Snapdragon 835. Now the manufacturer decided it should launch a phone with the same body but without all the cool features under the name . The chipset of the Nubia Z17 Lite is Snapdragon 653, paired with octa-core CPU and Adreno 510 GPU. The stripped phone has only 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage. Since the body is the same as the Nubia Z17 with the 5.5 edge-to-edge display, a microSD slot is nonexistent. The main camera was also overhauled. Instead of 12 MP + 23 MP sensors, there are two 13 MP sensors. One of them in RGB with a f/2.2 aperture, while the other is monochrome. Both cameras have IMX258 sensor by Sony. At least ZTE kept the 16 MP camera with f/2.0 aperture and 80-degree wide-angle lens. The battery is 3,200 mAh but it can be charged only through QuickCharge 3.0. There is a fingerprint scanner on the back for all the users taking care of their private information. The Nubia Z17 Lite will be available after September 6 with a CNY2,499 price tag which equals $379. |

New Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ update brings faster face recognition

New Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ update brings faster face recognition

/ units on Verizon have started getting a new update that brings along a lot of changes. The update arrives as version NRD90M.G950USQU1AQGL for the S8 and NRD90M.G955USQU1AQGL for the S8+. One of the major changes the update includes is a new 'Faster recognition' option in the Face Recognition menu. When enabled, the option lets users unlock their device instantly, although security is compromised. Moving on, the next change is related to that small, round lock/unlock button that was introduced in the previous update as a way to turn off the navigation bar. Basically, with the new update, users will have to double tap that button (instead of a single tap) to make it do its work. Then there's a minor Always On Display (AOD)-related change. It's basically an adjustment to prevent instances where an alarm related notification does not appear on the AOD while device is idle. The update also includes a couple of fixes, related to Bluetooth and Bixby, as well as updates to a couple of apps. For B2B enterprise customers, the update brings along Knox and VPN-related changes. Samsung Galaxy Note8 is the best screen DisplayMate has ever tested

Samsung Galaxy Note8 is the best screen DisplayMate has ever tested

Theres no doubt that Samsung can make some of the best display panels on the market. After all, Samsung makes its own TVs and even supplies panels to other TV manufacturers. With that much display experience and research under its belt, Samsung is well equipped to push the limits of its own smartphone displays so much so that Samsung keeps outdoing its other smartphones on DisplayMates tests. For reference, the on DisplayMates tests (the and ),and the Galaxy Note8 has beat the S8s excellent score. For starters, the Note8 gets 22% higher peak brightness than the Galaxy S8, reaching past 1,200 nits, which is very impressive. Of course, the Note8 gets the same HDR certifications that the S8 got. Other highlights include: Full 100% color gamut used on 4K TVs certified by the UHD alliance. Larger native color gamut with deeper reds. 112% DCI-P3 and 141% of sRGB. Apple to unveil iPhone 8 on September 12, possibly at Steve Jobs Theater

Apple to unveil iPhone 8 on September 12, possibly at Steve Jobs Theater

If you've had enough of all the leaks and are ready for Apple to finally make its latest smartphones official, you'll be happy to know which date to mark in your calendar for that. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, the company will be holding an event on September 12. It is currently aiming to use the Steve Jobs Theater on its new headquarters campus. However, the new HQ isn't finished yet, and depending on how construction on site goes the company may be unable to actually hold the announcement at the venue. The backup plan is likely to be the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, where it's held events in the past two years. The information comes from people briefed on Apple's plans, and corroborates an earlier rumor that originated at European carriers and talked about the exact same date for the grand unveiling. So at this point it's probably time for Apple to issue the press invites. Interestingly, the company has used the same September 12 date for an announcement in the past it was on that day that the became . Now, five years later, the heavily redesigned is going to be outed (even though it may be called something else, like iPhone X), sporting a near-bezelless OLED display, wireless charging, and facial recognition. The will join it, though these will be very similar to their predecessors aside from a new chipset and glass used on the back instead of aluminum. Additionally, a 4K HDR capable Apple TV should be present at Apple's event this September, along with the . Given the company's past antics, we can probably expect the new iPhones to become available on Friday, September 22, with pre-orders going live exactly one week before that. |

MIUI 9 Global Beta ROM now out for 9 more Xiaomi phones

MIUI 9 Global Beta ROM now out for 9 more Xiaomi phones

Ever since the , tensions surrounding MIUI 9 have been high, with eager Xiaomi users anxiously checking back for release schedules. As promised, the Xiaomi Mi 6 and Redmi Note 4x were earlier this month. Now the rollout has expanded to a second wave of Xiaomi devices, which is significantly larger than the first: It is worth noting that the current 7.8.24 release is a Beta one. We are also discussing the Global ROM version, although the Chinese Developer ROM is in pretty much the same boat as far as compatible devices go. You can check that out at the second source link, in case you want to run your device on the Chinese software branch. As for update instructions, you can simply use the MIUI Updater app if you are already running on a MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM. MIUI V5, MIUI 6, MIUI 7 and MIUI 8 stable ROM users need to go the fastboot route to flash the ROM, which does entail a storage wipe. The rest of the MIUI rollout schedule is even more impressive and includes some really old Xiaomi phones: This last batch should get the Beta some time by late September. The new MIUI 9 brings Smart app launcher, Image search, and Smart assistant. It also has a particular CPU acceleration mode and better haptic feedback. The eagerly-anticipated Android Nougat split screen feature should also be a part of the update, but some models might not get it immediately or at all. The jury is still out on that one. |

Samsung Gear Sport watch leaks: a watch for swimmers

Samsung Gear Sport watch leaks: a watch for swimmers

We had an inkling that the will not be the only wearable Samsung brings to IFA and now we know the other one the Samsung Gear Sport (SM-R600). This one seems to break the Gear S naming convention, but other than that the familiar features seem on board round screen, Tizen and a heart rate sensor (visible in the ). The text below the watch promises 5 ATM waterproofing thats serious resistance as far as smartwatches go, making the Gear Sport suitable for swimming. Presumably there are related features (e.g. stroke count and lap tracking), but the text doesnt elaborate, it just says coming soon. The watch should be the first device to run Tizen 3.0 and will definitely have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The FCC certification did not show LTE connectivity though, either thats coming later or not at all. Expect to see this one at IFA at the end of the month. (in Korean)

Netflix mobile HDR and Dolby Vision coming in version 5.0

Netflix mobile HDR and Dolby Vision coming in version 5.0

This year, we have not one but two HDR capable smartphones on the market, the and the . Yet, two months after the launch of these devices we still don't have any HDR content on mobile. So what gives? Well, it seems Netflix might be coming with some soon. According to the company's support page, HDR and Dolby Vision content will be coming soon on mobile. This will be available in the upcoming version 5.0 release of the Android app and the only device supported for now is LG G6. No support for the Galaxy S8 has been announced at this point. As for Amazon, the company's support page mentions support for HDR content on the , which, as we know, was pulled off shelves last year. According to that page, the Note7 is also the only Android device that has HD playback support while all other Android devices get only SD. We can confirm from our Galaxy S8 that we do have HD playback support but there is no HDR support yet (this has been corroborated by other Galaxy S8 users on reddit). We have no information on when Amazon will start streaming HDR content on the Galaxy S8. As of now, neither the G6 nor the S8 have any official HDR content available for consumption. Let's hope Netflix and Amazon flick the switch because it's not as if there isn't any HDR content out there; it's just not being made available for mobile yet.

For one, the Redmi Note 5A will be the first Redmi device with two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD one, for cards up to 128GB. Both the and relied on a hybrid design, so this is a notable step up. The other piece of news concerns the front-facing camera. Recent have been rather confusing in this area, but it is now clear that at least one of the Redmi 5A variants (presumably the top-tier one) will have a 16MP front camera with a selfie flash. Perhaps that leaves the cheaper version with a 13MP selfie snapper. Then again, 5MP has been tossed around as well. Speaking of tiers, we currently know of two main ones. Both are said to share the same 5.5 720p screen (an LCD) and a 3,000mAh battery inside a metal body thats 7.3mm thick. Basic connectivity should be identical as well: 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and an IR blaster. As for the differences, the entry-level one will likely have a Snapdragon 425 chipset, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The Pro or Prime one is expected to ramp that up to a Snapdragon 430 or 435, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. A fingerprint reader might be exclusive to the latter as well. The expected price of the Note 5A is CNY 1,000 (about $150), presumably for the Snapdragon 430 model since it compares against a CNY 1,200 (about $180) (which will have Snapdragon 630 and 660 versions).

Google Home can now stream to Bluetooth devices and connect to free Spotify accounts

Google Home can now stream to Bluetooth devices and connect to free Spotify accounts

If you thought Google would sit around and wait for competitors like Spotify, Apple and Amazon to carve up the multimedia market one way or the other, think again. The web giant is constantly improving and restructuring its offers, services and platforms and the intentions and plans are finally starting to shine through big time. Google Home might have been a bit tardy to the new home automation/multimedia hub party kicked off (in a way) by the Amazon Echo, but it is quickly catching up. Besides the companys own Play Music service and Spotify Premium, to name a few, Google Home now supports free Spotify accounts as well something Amazon's friendly Alexa can't really offer it's users yet. So, it's definitely game on! If you are a Google Home user, you can test the feature for yourself. It works just like Google Play Music Free and the Pandora implementation on the device: You ask for a song, artist, album or even a genre, mood or activity and Spotify can hook you up with a shuffled selection of music inspired by that request. Of course, ads are mixed in there as well, but that's just Spotify's business model. The other major new feature Google Home can finally offer and tick off the Amazon Echo comparison list is streaming to other Bluetooth devices. This has been in the product road map for some time now and Google is finally starting to deliver on its promise. Some Home users are reporting the new feature in the settings menu of the Google Home app, labled paired Bluetooth devices. It is pretty self-explanatory and a great way to push your home audio setup into the trendy IoT realm. A few side notes though. Support seems to be rolling out in stages and you will require at least firmware version 93937 on your Google Home for it to work. Also, some users have been reporting laggy audio in this initial version. But we are more than certain Google will iron that out ASAP. Like we said, the puzzle pieces are really starting to fall into place. Google's is clearly putting some extra effort into freemium services, which could easily sway some users away from the competition in what is still a very young and dynamic market niche. That, however, raises a few interesting questions. Primarely, how exactly is this odd smart home/automation/multimedia market even going to evolve and interact with users. In its current cloud-based shape, it seems the quality and interoperability of services trumps all other factors, features and concerns. Hardware might very well be irrelevant and completely interchangeable soon. A little hacking and you can pretty much get Amazon's Alexa to communicate with Google's Assistant service. Third-party Alexa-compatible devices are becoming common place as well. So if the future is indeed a colud service battlefield in the making, Google is definitely doing something right with its platforms. YouTube Red might still be in its infancy and pretty limited in reach, but its YouTube Music arm is more profitable to recording artists that any of its alternatives. The bold statement actually comes from the division's head Lyor Cohen. He claims YouTube Music currently has a chart-topping royalty rate of over $3 per thousand ad-supported streams in the US. He also stated that YouTube's ads have generated over $1 billion for the music industry in the past 12 months. And the plot could thicken further if Google Play Music and YouTube Music merge into a single platform a rumor that has been floating around for some time now. The aftermath could be huge for the entire music industry, not to mention the end user market. Even as it is, thanks to its new Content ID system, YouTube is a able to identify an artist's music with near perfect accuracy and pay out due royalties, regardless of the uploader and source of the content. We might have gotten a bit sidetracked there, but this is clearly a much broader topic to discuss. So, what are your two cents on the matter? Have you chosen sides yet or do you think it's too early to commit to any single technology right on the brink of the IoT revolution? Tell us in the comments.

Samsung reportedly bought up almost all available Snapdragon 845 chips

Samsung reportedly bought up almost all available Snapdragon 845 chips

A rumor by the fairly reliable @ice suggests we may have a repeat of the first half of the year when Samsung hoarded all available supply of Qualcomms top chipset, leaving other makers to search for alternatives (like the 821) or delaying their H1 flagships. Allegedly, Samsung has done it again and bought up most of the initial batch of Snapdragon 845 chips. Those will be used in the Galaxy S9, specifically the one to be sold in the US. Samsung will have the Exynos 9810 for Europe and Asia, but thats of little consolation to the likes of LG, HTC and Sony (Huawei and Xiaomi do have their own chips, though). Earlier, Qualcomm selected to fab the Snapdragon 845. Now it seems that this decision wasnt driven by what happened last year Samsung Semiconductor building Snapdragon 835 chips and sending them to Samsung Electronics, which pushed others to resort to using the older chipset.
