Top smartphone reviews of 2017

Top smartphone reviews of 2017

Being a mobile tech reviewer definitely has its perks. Shiny new devices are great and all, but still, at the end of the day, the most gratifying thing is to see our work actually help out readers and eager buyers navigate the vast and often confusing smartphone market. 2017 was a really interesting year, with many great announcements and more than one interesting trend set in motion and ready to unfold in 2018. Before CES kicks off and draws our collective attention to the future of mobile, what better time to sift through the top ten reviews of 2017, as rated by your interest. Starting from the top of the list, it's clear that Samsung had yet another strong year in the business. Not only is the Korean giant getting the lion's share of sales in most markets, but it is also drawing ever-growing amounts of attention towards its industry-leading and trend-setting designs. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, in particular, really shook thinks up vigorously, with their bold Infinity Display, curvy profile, finally breaking the long-standing slab design mold. Besides, topping the review popularity chart, Samsung phones also proudly hold the sixth and seventh spot. Forth place goes to one of the company's devices as well, the Galaxy A5 (2017), but that represents a whole other 2017 trend, we are probably even more excited about the quest towards great value devices. It's true. Whether it is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, the more expensive Xiaomi Mi A1, or the pricier still OnePlus 5 budget flagship, more and more companies are trying their best to deliver great value handsets in most every price bracket. Better still, consumers are starting to expect and demand these offers. 2017 saw an interesting mix of value-first trends in the industry, along with a new breed of ultra-expensive flagships, officially passing the $1000 barrier. Nokia's surprisingly well-received comeback added, even more, excitement to the mix. We can only imagine what new developments and intriguing devices 2018 has in store. In the meantime, if you've missed any of our top reviews in 2017, now might be a great time to catch up.

Apple & Samsung take 70% of holiday activations

Apple & Samsung take 70% of holiday activations

During this holiday season Apple & Samsung accounted for 70% of devices activated according to Flurry Analytics, with Apple taking the Lions share with 44%. Google was a no show. Flurry took a look at the most gifted smartphones and tablets around the globe this holiday season, examining activations throughout the week leading up to Christmas day. Flurry Analytics, part of Oath, is used by over 1M mobile apps and has insight into 2.1 billion devices worldwide. Similar to last year, 44% of new phone and tablet activations were Apple devices. Whilst Samsungs activation rate is up 5% from 2016 they fell short of Apple at 26%. Of note, Vivo who didnt appear in last years numbers, had a significant adoption, which was attributed to their growth in China and India. Notably absent is Google, Flurry reason that due to a limited number of phone models (4) and lack of consumer mind-share, the Pixel is failing to garner users interest. Due to their affordability the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6 beat out Apples latest releases the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, although the iPhone X was a close third. When combined ,however, Apples latest releases the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X made up almost a third of all new activations at 31.5%. The prominence of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 7 however proves that cost is still a priority for consumers. The iPhone 6 was relaunched this year in select international markets as a more affordable option. Continuing the trend, Phablets (5in 6.9in) have overtaken medium phones (3.5in 4.9in) to take 53% of the market share. With consumers not replacing their tablets as often total tablet activations dropped to 12% down from 17% in 2016.

Today from a source in China comes a list of handsets that will be using the SD845 in 2018 along with their expected announcement timelines. We can't verify the validity of this information, but the presence of these devices in the list is anything but surprising. In February, Samsung will unveil the and , which will feature Qualcomm's chip in some markets. LG will also take the wraps off the G7 during the same month. Then in April the Xiaomi Mi 7 will be outed, followed in May by the HTC U12. June will be the launch month for the OnePlus 6, ZTE nubia Z18, and Sony Xperia XZ Pro-A, while the Samsung Galaxy Note9 arrives in September, alongside the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and LG V40. October is the month when the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL get announced, but also the nubia Z18S and Sony Xperia XZ2 and HTC U12+. In November Motorola will out the Moto Z 2019 with the SD845, while December is when OnePlus will release the 6T and Samsung will do the flip phone thing once again with the W2019, the successor to the . There are some interesting omissions in this list, so while it is comprehensive you shouldn't see it as exhaustive we could certainly see other devices powered by the SD845 in 2018, which aren't in it. Edward Snowden's Haven is a monitoring app for your surroundings

Edward Snowden's Haven is a monitoring app for your surroundings

Edward Snowden, along with security engineer Micah Lee, have released an Android app in partnership with The Guardian Project. This app is intended for citizens who themselves or their possessions are at risk and would like to monitor their surroundings to warn them of intruders. Called Haven, the app uses the sensors on your Android device to track various metrics. It uses the accelerometer to track the movement of the device and surrounding vibrations, camera to track movements of objects in view, microphones to track noises in the environment, ambient light sensors to track changes in the lights and power to check if the phone was unplugged or the power cut. The way this is supposed to work is that you should ideally install this app on a burner phone with a SIM card. The app is then configured to log all the information and send notifications to a number, ideally your personal number, over a secure channel like Signal or Tor with end-to-end encryption. If the app picks up any data from the sensors, such as someone entering your room or accessing your belongings (let's say, your laptop) then it will immediately send notifications to your main number. Alternatively, it can be installed on your main phone and have the notifications be sent to a trusted number, alerting them in case you come in physical danger. Admittedly, an app that uses sensors to track everything about your surroundings doesn't sound any less scary than the threats it claims to protect you against. But for those paranoid, the app is open source, so anyone can look at the underlying source code and the developers have invited people to contribute to it. You can also compile the app yourself using Android Studio and Gradle. All the necessary libraries and third-party dependencies are provided on their GitHub page. Haven is currently in beta and available for download for free on Android. 2

As with 4K support on Windows 10, the HDR support comes with a handful of provisos. First of all, you need the four person plan to access HDR content. Also, just like 4K, you need to use Microsoft Edge or the Netflix app to view HDR content. These will only show up as HDR if you are connected to an HDR display. Apart from that, you also need an Intel 7th generation or newer Core processor or an NVIDIA 900 or 1000 series graphics card. Netflix currently has over 200 hours of content in HDR, including popular shows like Stranger Things, Daredevil, Chef's Table, Star Trek Discovery, Mindhunter, Marco Polo, and more.

Pokemon Go on iOS now supports Apple's ARKit for improved mechanics

Pokemon Go on iOS now supports Apple's ARKit for improved mechanics

Today Niantic Labs and the Pokemon Company, the entities behind the hugely successful Pokemon Go game, have announced a new set of features coming to iPhones. They are collectively called AR+, and are made possible by leveraging Apple's ARKit framework, which debuted in iOS 11. For that reason, you need to be running that version of the OS or a newer one in order to see the new functionality. You also have to sport an iPhone 6s or newer model. So what's the fuss about? Well, first off, with AR+ the Pokemon are fixed to a point in space, so you can walk up real close to them and see how they look from a few inches away. But wait, there's more. The Pokemon are now aware of you getting close, and they will run away if you push it too much. You can sneak up close to earn an Expert Handler bonus, but you do need to be extra careful not to scare the Pokemon away. An awareness meter will appear next to each monster, and when this fills up the creature will flee. If this happens you can tap on the tall grass nearby, as that might cause the Pokemon in question to reappear. If you're able to catch one while in its close proximity, you'll have a better chance of earning Great and Excellent Throw bonuses, on top of the aforementioned new Expert Handler bonus. This awards even more XP and Stardust. |

Upgraded AirPods for 2018

Upgraded AirPods for 2018

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today issued a pair of notes to investors covering the availability of AirPods and the possibility for a revision to the hardware in the second half of 2018. Since their launch in 2016 Apple struggled to keep up with demand for AirPods. Even so, Kuo estimates that AirPod shipments will experience 100 percent growth and reach 28 million units in 2018. Kuo didn't offer up any details regarding the design or feature set for the revised AirPods other than that they will include a smaller quartz component. Kuo also stated they could have a higher average selling price. Currently manufactured by Inventec, Apple has also recruited Luxshare to manufacture AirPods. Additionally, it's believed that a constraint in the supply of the RF printed-circuit boards for AirPod batteries are one reason why Apple can't meet the demand. Next year Apple are launching the AirPower mat that is capable of charging an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods simultaneously. Current AirPods required the new inductive charging case, whilst it's possible you'll be able to buy a skew of the AirPods that include the new charging case.

The image clearly shows a very similar design to the and , but with ever so slightly smaller screen bezels. The trimming is especially noticeable when you glance at the bottom bezel, but it's definitely still a bezel the once-rumored complete cutting of that hasn't panned out, it seems. From a different Chinese source comes word that the smaller S9 will ship with a 3,200 mAh battery, a welcome 200 mAh bump from the S8. It's unclear if the S9+ will have a bigger cell than the S8+. The charger bundled with the S9 will allegedly be a 12W part, and the phone will support Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 standard. Mass production for the new S-series duo is set to start in January, ahead of the recently revealed timeline. (in Chinese) | (in Chinese) | | (in Italian) |

Facebook to start demoting posts with engagement bait titles

Facebook to start demoting posts with engagement bait titles

Facebook has announced a new policy that should cut down on a lot of spammy garbage from your timeline. Going forward, all posts that ask users to engage with them in any way will be demoted and buried out of view. Engagement baiting is a tactic that has become popular on the internet recently where the headline goads the reader into interacting it in some way or the other. On Facebook, these usually manifest themselves as posts that begin with Like this if or Tag someone who or Comment if you, etc. These get people to interact with them, which in turn increases their engagement quotient and makes them rank higher. Well, not for long. Facebook will soon start downranking these type of posts. The developers have reviewed and categorized hundreds of such posts to create a machine learning model, which will go through all the posts and demote those that fit the bill. Facebook is currently giving a warning period to publishers time to adapt and stop their engagement baiting techniques before rolling out the changes in the coming weeks. Pages who continue to do so will see significantly reduced reach for their posts and eventually the entire page itself. This is a useful change considering just how much of Facebook and the internet in general is littered with such content. It's likely these publishers will come up with other tactics to attract users but hopefully now that Facebook has woken up to them it will be more proactive in stopping any such trends in future.

We already know to expect the first bezel-less Xperia phones in 2018, but at this point it isn't clear if the image is legit or not. So until we get an official announcement, or at least more solid evidence, don't take anything for granted.

Nokia 2 in for review

Nokia 2 in for review

The is here and enters the line for review. It packs modest specs in a modest package 5-inch LCD, 1GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 212 chipset but comes at an attractive price 99/$99. So who is it for? And what does it offer in exchange for that attractive price? The Nokia 2 is for the buyer that needs the cheapest smartphone, but also wants good battery life. Traditionally, low-end phones had pretty poor endurance, but HMD aims to change that. Our review will include a detailed battery test of the Nokia 2 but the specs sheet is promising. Couple a 4,100 with a low-res 5-inch screen and a low-power Snapdragon 212 and you have a good recipe for long-lasting battery. HMD promises you'll get 2 days of use, which sounds quite impressive for this price range. When you get your hands on the Nokia 2 you're immediately surprised by its build quality. It feels solid and well made. The entry-level price means there are no luxuries like a fingerprint scanner or stereo speakers, but there is a metal frame and a grippy plastic back. The retail box has the necessities covered a charger and cable it's microUSB as the Nokia 2 didn't make the switch to USB-C. The display is surprisingly good too. It's resolution is only 720p but at 5-inches wide you won't see any pixelation. The panel is contrasty and gets decently bright too. The Nokia 2 comes with Android 7.1.1 that's almost purely stock. Sadly that isn't enough to make the Nokia 2 a snappy device. Even UI animations stutter a bit on the Nokia 2 while running intensive apps like YouTube causes noticeable lag. We guess a bit of lag is par for course in this price range but it may put some buyers off. Of course the performance issues can turn out to be an issue fixable through software we'll check it out in detail in our full review. Expect a complete rundown of software, performance, camera, battery life and more, coming soon.
